Dr Chan’s research interests lie in the application of statistical and mathematical methods to solve problems in computational and evolutionary biology. His particular interest is in phylogenetics, which uses genome sequence data to reconstruct evolutionary events and relationships between species and the genes in their genomes. This leads to an understanding of the mechanisms behind genetic evolution. Current research topics include detection of lateral genetic transfer and genetic co-evolution, and modelling of incomplete lineage sorting and whole genome duplication.
